Black Women are worth 5 dollars?

April 12, 2010

I just found an interesting study that was recently covered by Clutch magazine that concluded that single women of color have a personal wealth of $5 meaning that their debt almost completely trumps their assets. I don't want to admit it, but I suppose that is true even for women like myself who are in an assload of debt for going to college and grad school. I have a good job, but I am in massive debt, like over $100,000. Obviously I am worth more than that because of my skills and talent, and hello my personality and soul, but in terms of money I am pretty worthless. Meaning if some money-hungry fool tried to kidnap me, they'd probably think again. I'm broke, my folks are broke, and you know what. I don't care because that means I'm safe. LOL jk.

Does it even need to be said that I think the data points are skewed. Can we talk about why black people are in debt. Why black folks don't have a lot of old money. What about imbalances in hiring and salary...The glass ceiling?

Anyway, I gotta run, but I wanted to share the article and the original report... [More]

What can you do instead?

April 5, 2010

Just read a blog from Seth Godin, that is pretty interesting. He talks about using TV time to do something productive. clearly not the first time I've thought about that, but it is nice to hear it reiterated by someone who isn't a hippie nerd like myself. I don't even have a TV. Anyway, Godin offers a pretty nice list of what you can do instead of watching TV:

    * Run a little store on eBay
    * Write a daily blog
    * Write a novel
    * Start an online community about your favorite passion
    * Go to meetups in your town
    * Volunteer to tutor a kid, in person or online
    * Learn a new language, verbal or programming
    * Write hand written thank you notes each evening to people who helped you out or did a good job
    * Produce small films and publish them online
    * Listen to the one thousand most important operas
    * Read a book or two every evening
    * Play a game of Scrabble with your family

It's all about productivity and using those extra hours to improve yourself instead of letting... [More]

don't sit around waiting. don't worry. miracles are what keep us alive.

i am in a fabulous mood today. perhaps because of my deeply cathartic sob session last night...

my life is funny sometimes.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time

April 5, 2010

Apparently Chatroulette is more fun when people aren't chatting. Someone decided it would be funny to put up a picture of the dancing banana and encourage people to dance. Here are some folks who actually did it...

let me re-introduce myself...

April 5, 2010

hey pals. long time no see. i've just arrived fresh from a vacation. to where you ask? ...my house. i've been spending these last couple of days trying to wean myself off of the internet. well not really. just taking a break. you know how you get sucked in every now and then and need to take a step back, like hold up, this isn't my real life. i had one of those epiphanies last week. now i feel like i can participate in internet activities at a normal pace and not be completely sucked in. let's see how long it lasts...

A bike to match my seat

March 11, 2010

A while ago, I posted a heart-shaped bicycle seat that I would want if I had a bike. Well I've finally found the bike to match. Isn't it gorgeous? Unfortunately, I have a phobia of riding bikes due to a childhood accident that ended in my getting a concussion...So no bikey for me. It is cute though!

The Book of Haughty Bitches

March 11, 2010

I loveeeee this project by illustrator carolyn alexander. I'm pretty sure that the print version has sold out, but you can find some sample images on her website. The above image is my favorite. I wish could make it into a t-shirt to wear when i go out to bars with my friends and skeevy uninteresting men try to hit on us.
